vehicle background.
In 1985, three Swedish companies were grouped together to form a broader vehicle
component company:
Garphyttan, which started to supply high quality valve spring wire for engines
to the growing American automotive industry in the 1920s. Haldex, which started
to supply brake adjusters for trucks & buses in 1968 (originally a subsidiary
of SAB which from 1919 produced brake regulators for trains).
Hesselman, which supplied electrohydraulic systems to trucks (originally a business
unit within Hesselman Motor AB producing fuel injection systems during the 1930s).
The Haldex brake adjuster business grew steadily, as automatic adjustment became
industry standard in Europe and USA. Production was started also in USA 1981.
In 1998, Midland-Grau was acquired to form today's SEK 4 billion brake systems
business for commercial vehicles.
Acquisitions 1987 of Barnes Corp., USA (founded by a Swedish immigrant to produce
hydraulic gear pumps) and 1991 of Vickers' gear pump business, has, together
with the Hesselman unit and in combination with organic growth, created today's
SEK 1 billion hydraulic business focused on industrial vehicles.
The Garphyttan wire business grew organically. In 1987, production was started
also in the U.S., and the SEK 0.7 billion wire business is today a world leader
in advanced wire products for engine applications.
In 1992, the patents for a new 4WD concept was acquired and development of a
4WD system started. Serial deliveries to the first customer (VW/Audi) started
in 1998. In the first full year 1999 sales reached SEK 195 m. and a technical
leadership was established with this first, truly controllable system.
